Solving the toughest energy challenges for a more sustainable future.

Batteries are a key component of a low carbon world, enabling wind and solar to power our world at any time. They have enabled the revolution in EVs, and Drones and are critical to the expansion of electric flight.

But more is needed. Higher capacity, lower cost and faster charging are vital for the expansion of battery powered transport and grid-level energy storage.

Our nanoscale graphene based technology enables new high performance CAM material that will deliver high capacity, longer lasting and faster charging batteries for an electric future.

Towards a low cobalt future

Our technology is engineered to enable the practical adoption of low cobalt, lithium and manganese-rich (LMR) cathode active materials (CAM). By eliminating or reducing the need for cobalt, which is an expensive and often non-domestically sourced material, GraphEnergy can help produce US-made, low-cost batteries while reducing supply chain constraints and increasing energy security.

Who are we?

GraphEnergy has licensed graphene and battery related technology from Caltech and is developing nanomaterials for use in advanced high-performance Lithium-ion batteries. Our team is composed of experts in graphene research and battery production, positioning us to meet aggressive lithium-ion battery (LIB) target objectives.

Our technology

GraphEnergy has licensed Caltech’s patented process for low temperature Microwave Plasma Enhanced CVD (PE-CVD) deposition to create Graphene Enhanced Nanomaterials (GEN). These particles are created independently from the CAM and then are applied to it using an industrial scale ordered-mixing process.

PE-CVD allows for lower deposition temperatures, and much faster growth than thermal CVD, with comparable quality graphene. One advantage of this plasma process is the ability to deposit high quality graphene on a range of materials which previously have been challenging for typical CVD processes.

Additionally, this unique plasma process cleans the surface of the materials during the same step thus facilitating growth of high-quality graphene directly on the source material with minimal impurities. Graphene has been shown to greatly enhance the performance of batteries due to its unique properties and ability to suppress Transition Metal Dissolution, one of the primary causes of battery degradation. Graphene encapsulated nanomaterial can vastly improve the charge rates, performance, cycle life and capacity of existing lithium ion batteries.

GraphEnergy is developing graphene additives for use in current and next generation high-performance batteries. These additives are designed to enable the industrial production of enhanced cathode and anode materials. They can be applied to a range of battery chemistries, representing a broad platform technology, which will advance the state of the art in battery performance
